Jesus was very responsive to people’s needs. But that’s not what he called discipleship. Discipleship is not the process of meeting people’s needs. It’s the process of learning to obey everything Christ commands.
We are so individualistic these days that we are reluctant to use the method Jesus used to train people how to pray, namely, imitation.
What is seldom noted in discipleship is the amazingly high cost of this philanthropy to the teacher. It is the students who receive the benefits as the teachers self-empty completely into them.
